French Parliament vote: Communication to the plastic industry

25 May 2011

The outcome of this vote has provoked a number of reactions and articles in the media. Some of these articles have implied a change in the regulations and as a result an immediate ban. However, this bill has not yet been passed by parliament and thus has not come into force

However, this bill has not yet been passed by parliament and thus has not come into force. The first reading in the National Assembly is the first step in the ongoing decision-making process. This bill has been presented to the Senate (the upper house) for debate, which is likely to take place in the next couple of months.

As a result, all regulations regarding the use of phthalates, parabens and alkylphenols remain unchanged.

Following the surprising result of the vote, the bill has been forwarded to the Senate where it may be debated and then, depending on the outcome of this debate, sent back for a second reading in the National Assembly.

ECPI will keep the plastics industry informed of the latest developments on this issue and of any actions concerning phthalates.
