Brussels, 20 February 2017 - On 16th February 2017, the European Commission’s REACH committee voted by qualified majority to include the four phthalates DEHP, BBP, DBP and DiBP in the REACH Candidate List as Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC), on the grounds of endocrine disruption for human health.
These four substances had already been classified as toxic to reproduction (cat. 1B) and included into the Candidate List in 2008 and 2010. With the present decision, the four entries will be up-dated as not only toxic to reproduction (REACH Art. 57(c)), but also of ‘equivalent level of concern’ (Art. 57(f)) due to endocrine activity.
Since both listings refer to the same adverse reproductive effects, ECPIs view is that this double listing is not useful.
